The Matzah Factory

What fun the children had as they ground wheat into flour in order to
make crunchy delicious matzah!

Ramps and Pulleys!

Continuing last week's discussion about pyramids we asked the children
how they thought the pyramids were constructed without the
availability of modern equipment. Some of their ideas included: ramps,
catapults, ladders and pulleys. The children then created these
mechanical devices which they thought could have been used to move
heavy objects in ancient times.

Sponge experiment!

The question was posed to the children which would absorb more water
a wet or dry sponge? They immersed both sponges in a container of
water and than weighed them. It was explained to the children that
since the wet (damp) sponge weighed more it obviously had absorbed
more water demonstrating that the water molecules in the wet sponge
attracted additional water to them while the dry did not!

Edible Pyramids!

Using their creativity the children in Gan Kochavim "built pyramids "
out of toothpicks and marshmallows. The marshmallows were not only fun
to use but they were delicious to eat as well!

Triangles/ Pyramids

This week in Gan Kochavim we discussed the triangular shape of the
pyramids. Giving the children two different sized plastic connecting
sticks they began to realize that to form the most common shape of a
pyramid they needed to use sticks of equal size. The children learned
that this type of triangle is known as an equilateral triangle meaning
that all three sides were of equal length. To more clearly see this,
the children used small connecting blocks to measure all three sides
and found that each side of the triangle required an equal number of
blocks to complete each measurement.
